Veracruz officials warn faulty electrical wiring causes most home fires

Guadalupe Tapia Hernández, the Director of Civil Protection for the Veracruz City Council, has identified faulty electrical installations and short circuits as the primary cause of residential fires in the city.

Many households in Veracruz consist of older buildings with electrical systems that were not designed to handle the high volume of modern electronic devices currently in use. A significant risk factor identified is the improper use of power strips, or 'multi-contacts,' to power high-demand appliances such as refrigerators, dryers, or irons. When these accessories are overloaded, the system can overheat, leading to short circuits and potential fires. The risk is reportedly higher in homes that also operate small businesses, as commercial equipment requires more power than standard domestic installations can safely provide.
