Veracruz population declines and ages, INEGI survey shows

Data from the 2025 INEGI Intercensal Survey reveals significant demographic shifts in Veracruz, Mexico. The state's population has decreased from approximately 8.06 million in 2020 to an estimated 7.91 million in 2025, a reduction of about 144,700 people. This decline is attributed to lower birth rates and negative migratory trends.

Veracruz is experiencing rapid demographic aging. The median age has risen from 31 to 34 years, and the proportion of residents aged 65 or older has increased from 8.2% in 2020 to 12.2% in 2025. This makes Veracruz the third state in Mexico with the highest percentage of elderly residents, following Mexico City and Morelos.

The survey also highlights a structural change in healthcare access. Public health coverage affiliation dropped from 75.2% to 66.4%, while reliance on private services increased. Specifically, the use of private clinics and hospitals rose from 13.6% to 23%, and the use of pharmacy-adjacent clinics grew from 12.8% to 17.8%.
