Veracruz professor urges road‑safety campaign after near‑miss accident

Professor Fernando Mendoza narrowly avoided a collision on Avenida Rafael Cuervo in northern Veracruz. In the incident, a motorcycle cut across his vehicle just as the traffic light turned green, forcing him to brake abruptly. Mendoza cited the episode as evidence of a growing “metamorphosis” on local streets caused by an uncontrolled increase in motorcycles.

He called for immediate road‑education and training programs in the municipality. Mendoza highlighted a year‑long study by University of Veracruz students that found widespread ignorance of traffic rules among motorcyclists, frequent riding without helmets or proper footwear, and dangerous weaving that is also influencing car drivers to misuse lane margins. He noted that the previous municipal administration ignored these findings, but the new local government has expressed willingness to discuss the study’s recommendations. Mendoza stressed the need for responsible regulation of motorcycles, which many families depend on for their livelihood, to reduce the state’s fatal accident rate.
