Veracruz salt plant odor causes school evacuations in Soconusco

A strong odor, described by residents as similar to ammonia or fuel, has spread across several municipalities in southern Veracruz, including Soconusco and Acayucan. Authorities attribute the smell to the evaporation of fuel remaining in the wells of a salt plant in Jáltipan de Morelos, where a fire was recently reported and has since been controlled.

In Soconusco, three schools—the Venustiano Carranza primary school, the Héroe de Nacozari telesecundaria, and the Juan de la Barrera telesecundaria—were evacuated as a preventive measure after some students reported symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and weakness.

Civil Protection officials from Acayucan and Soconusco have stated that the situation does not pose a grave risk to the general population. They have advised residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and use face masks if the odor becomes intense. Wind conditions are expected to continue carrying the vapors to surrounding areas like Oluta and Texistepec as the product continues to evaporate due to high temperatures.
