Veracruz clears landslide‑blocked road in Ilamatlán, plans new bridge

Heavy rains on July 16‑17 caused landslides that blocked the Los Naranjos–Ilamatlán–Atempa road in the municipality of Ilamatlán, Veracruz. The federal Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) deployed crews with excavators, tractors and dump trucks to remove the debris and restore traffic between the local communities.

A video of a large slide circulated on social media; officials confirmed that the slide occurred on the river margin and did not affect the road’s access to the town of Atempa. As part of the reconstruction, SICT announced plans to build a new bridge to improve connectivity. The original tender for the bridge was declared void because participating firms did not meet requirements; a new tender will include river‑bed cleaning work.

The incident is part of a broader maintenance program that will routinely service 2,613 kilometres of federal roads in Veracruz, alongside other projects such as the Alvarado–Tuxtepec highway works and the Veracruz Port access road upgrade.
