Veracruz to install blockade against illegal Guatemalan sugar

The government of Veracruz will establish a blockade at phytosanitary and zoosanitary inspection points to prevent the illegal entry of sugar from Guatemala. Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García stated that massive amounts of Guatemalan sugar are entering Mexico, with a portion being smuggled through Chiapas to evade high tariffs.

According to Nahle García, once the sugar enters Chiapas, it is allegedly processed through sugar mills to be misidentified as Mexican-produced sugar before being distributed to other states. To combat this, the governor has requested additional controls from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The plan involves reinforcing existing inspection stations in Veracruz and maintaining coordination with customs authorities in Chiapas to monitor and report on the movement of the sweetener. The governor emphasized that this irregular trade harms national sugar production and local industries.
