Veracruz water crisis: CAEV accused of permitting housing amid shortages
Residents in the Perote region of Veracruz have denounced the State Water Commission (CAEV) for allegedly granting construction permits to Vivienda Veracruzana S.A. de C.V. for 650 new homes despite severe water shortages in the area.
Community members from the indigenous community of Tepozoteco and the Infonavit Los Molinos neighborhood report that over 1,800 people have faced inadequate water supplies for more than 15 years. The local well reportedly yields only 6 liters per second, requiring water to be transported over three kilometers.
Local residents claim that CAEV Perote head Manuel Gómez Montes and Director General Luis Fernando Cervantes Cruz authorized the housing project without conducting technical studies or ensuring sufficient water supply for existing users. In response, community members have announced plans to protest and file legal complaints against CAEV officials for abuse of authority.
