Veraguas fishermen attacked at sea by armed group

Four fishermen from the Malena community in the Mariato district of Veraguas were targeted in an attack at sea. The victims, traveling in two boats approximately five nautical miles from their departure point, were intercepted by three vessels carrying more than 15 people.

The attackers reportedly used threats, physical aggression against the boats, and projectiles, including gunfire, to force the fishermen out of the area. While the crew survived with some injuries, the incident has caused local fishing activities to be suspended due to fear. Authorities suspect the aggression may be linked to disputes over fishing territories.

In response, the National Aeronaval Service has intensified maritime and land patrols in the waters south of Veraguas, including Hicaco, Santa Catalina, Isla Gobernadora, and Isla Cébaco, as part of Operation Pesca Digna 2026. Investigations are ongoing to clarify the circumstances of the attack.
