Verbania lakefront naming sparks political controversy

The city of Verbania has sparked political controversy following a decision by the municipal government to name its lakefront after Sergio Ramelli. Ramelli was a member of the Fronte della Gioventù who was killed in Milan in 1975 at the age of 18 by members of Avanguardia Operaia.

The decision has met with significant opposition. Center-left opposition members in the City Council have protested the move, while three former mayors from the area have called for a reconsideration, alleging the dedication is part of a national campaign promoted by far-right organizations. Additionally, the National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI) has expressed its opposition and indicated a readiness to protest the naming.
