Vercors Massif: Wolf attack kills 54 ewes in Isère

A wolf attack in the Vercors Massif of Isère resulted in the deaths of 54 ewes at an alpine pasture in Villars-de-Lans. According to Sébastien Mollet of the French Biodiversity Office (OFB), approximately 15 sheep were killed directly by the wolves, while the remaining animals died of suffocation after falling into a hollow while attempting to flee the predators. Eight other sheep were injured in the incident.

This event follows a similar attack in the neighboring Drôme department, where a pack killed or caused the deaths of 64 ewes in Bouvante during the night of August 30 to 31. These recurring incidents have fueled growing anger among livestock farmers, who are calling on the state to increase wolf culling. Conversely, wildlife defense organizations continue to oppose such measures.
