Verdi opera productions receive mixed reviews in Rome and Mannheim
Recent productions of Giuseppe Verdi's operas have met with varied critical reception in Italy and Germany.
At the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Tatjana Gürbaca’s directorial debut with ‘Falstaff’ was met with boos from the premiere audience. The production, which interprets the protagonist as a social outsider in a world dominated by status and money, was criticized for its aesthetic choices. The setting, described as a dilapidated hotel with a scenography resembling a concrete shopping center parking lot, was noted for failing to balance the work's inherent lightness with its psychological depth.
In Mannheim, the Nationaltheater Mannheim staged ‘Simon Boccanegra’ under the direction of Yona Kim and conductor Roberto Rizzi Brignoli. While the production explored the dark themes of power and individual tragedy, critics noted a lack of psychological depth in the staging, describing the characters as ‘singing sculptures.’ The musical direction was initially criticized for overly broad tempos, though the performance reportedly gained momentum and tension during the final two acts.
