Greece records multiple fatal traffic crashes as road deaths fall

A 60‑year‑old man died after his car collided with a concrete wall in the centre of Veria on 22 June, while his 64‑year‑old sister was injured. The accident occurred on Patriarchiou Iouachim Street and emergency services transported the victim to General Hospital of Veria where he was pronounced dead.

In Fthiotida, a separate crash on 24 June saw a car plunge onto a grass‑cutting truck on the Thermopylon‑Agia Triada bypass. The driver of the car suffered fatal injuries and was taken to Lamia Hospital, where he later died.

Earlier in the year, a collision between two passenger cars on the old national road Argo‑Corinth near Fichti in Argolis resulted in injuries but no deaths, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on Greek roads.

Despite these incidents, Greece reported a 22 % reduction in road‑traffic deaths in 2025, with 517 fatalities compared with 665 in 2024, marking the country’s best performance since 1963. The decline is attributed to stricter enforcement of traffic laws, safety campaigns, and the new Road Code.

Authorities continue investigations into the causes of the recent fatal crashes while monitoring broader road‑safety trends.
