Verizon activates network defenses for Tropical Storm Isaias
Verizon has activated a network readiness plan to maintain connectivity along the Gulf Coast as Tropical Storm Isaias approaches and is forecast to become the season’s first Atlantic hurricane. The company is monitoring conditions 24/7, topping off permanent generator fuel tanks, and positioning portable generators and mobile equipment in northern Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi for rapid post-storm deployment.
To ensure infrastructure resilience, Verizon has staged mobile assets including Cell on Light Trucks (COLTs), MatSing Equipment on Wheels (MEOWs), and Business Inclusive Satellite Onboard Nomadic (BISON) units. The company is also prepared to use backup microwave equipment to reroute traffic if fiber lines are damaged. Specialized field teams, such as the Dedicated Impact Response Team (DIRT), are already deployed in Florida and Alabama, while the Verizon Frontline Crisis Response Team remains on standby to support public safety agencies.
For customers, Verizon is offering satellite connectivity as a lifeline. Compatible devices, including iPhone 14 or later, Google Pixel 9 or later, and Samsung Galaxy S25 or later, can send text messages via satellite to other Verizon customers and emergency services if terrestrial networks fail.
