Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ to return to Japan

The masterpiece ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ by Johannes Vermeer is returning to Japan for the first time in 14 years. The exhibition, titled ‘Vermeer: Girl with a Pearl Earring Exhibition’, will be held at the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art from August 21 to September 27, 2026.

On loan from the Mauritshuis in The Hague, the exhibition features two of Vermeer’s most significant works: ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ and ‘Diana and Nymphs’. The collection also includes works by other 17th-century Dutch Golden Age masters such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Jan Steen, and Paulus Potter.

A specialized exhibition catalog has been released, providing 170 pages of content including scientific research, neuroscientific analysis, and essays by the exhibition supervisors. Notably, visitors will be permitted to take photographs of the two Vermeer masterpieces.
