Vermont and Nova Scotia sign offshore wind cooperation agreement
Vermont Governor Phil Scott and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston have signed a three-year memorandum of understanding to cooperate on offshore wind energy, electricity transmission planning, and regional grid integration.
The agreement aims to explore methods for delivering electricity from Nova Scotia’s offshore wind resources to New England. Nova Scotia is planning to issue licenses for 5 gigawatts of power this year, with plans for an additional 10 gigawatts in the future, which could potentially power approximately 12 million homes.
To facilitate power delivery, the jurisdictions will investigate various routes, including utilizing the Highgate Converter—a high-voltage direct current station in Franklin County that links the New England and Canadian grids. This partnership follows a similar agreement reached between Massachusetts and Nova Scotia in February.
