Vern Cotter appointed as Queensland Reds head coach
Vern Cotter has been appointed as the new head coach of the Queensland Reds, marking a historic trans-Tasman move as the first coach to lead an Australian club after coaching a New Zealand one. The Auckland native, who previously led the Blues to a Super Rugby title and won Top 14 championships in France, aims to bridge the competitive gap between Australian sides and their New Zealand rivals.
Cotter emphasized a focus on efficiency and results over aesthetics, stating, “you don’t get points for artistic display. You’ve got to be effective and win games.” He noted that while the talent exists in Australia to be competitive in individual matches, the goal is to maintain that level throughout the season to challenge dominant teams like the Hurricanes.
Taking over at Ballymore, Cotter intends to build on the physicality and ball-movement skills present in the local players. He has also brought Blues defense coach Craig McGrath to Brisbane to assist in his efforts to improve the team's performance.
