Veteran Nashville music journalist and author Vernell Hackett has died at the age of 77. She passed away in Chicago on August 14 following a cardiac arrest.

Originally born Vernell Dell Boswank in Riesel, Texas, Hackett was a prominent figure in the country music industry. She was a co-founder of American Songwriter magazine, serving as its editor-in-chief for more than ten years. Her journalistic career included editorial roles at Country News and Country Rhythms.

Throughout her career, Hackett held various positions, including working in public relations for the Country Music Association and for booking agent Tandy Rice at Top Billing International. She was noted for her deep connections with artists and her vivid storytelling. Her professional history included working with figures such as Chris LeDoux, as well as representing or covering artists like Dolly Parton, Porter Wagoner, and Tom T. Hall.
