Vernon and Coldstream launch automatic firefighting aid pilot

The City of Vernon and the District of Coldstream have launched the Automatic Aid Pilot Project, a two-year agreement designed to streamline the sharing of firefighting resources between the two municipalities.

Under this new arrangement, Coldstream will automatically dispatch a fire engine and crew to general alarm fires in Vernon. Conversely, Vernon Fire Rescue Services will automatically dispatch an engine and crew to structure or working fires within a designated response area in Coldstream.

Unlike traditional mutual aid, which requires a request for assistance after initial responders arrive, this automatic aid model ensures that neighboring resources are dispatched immediately upon the report of qualifying incidents. Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming noted that the initiative aims to allow firefighters to work together more effectively by providing faster access to personnel and equipment during the critical early stages of an emergency.
