Vernon business owners launch campaigns for city council seats

Local entrepreneurs Stuart Anderson and David Scarlatescu have entered the race for Vernon city council in the October 17, 2026 municipal election. Anderson, who owns the Rusty Spur and Briteland establishments and has a background in accounting and finance, emphasizes fiscal responsibility and infrastructure growth for the rapidly expanding North Okanagan community. He also volunteers with senior‑living and hospital programs.

Scarlatescu, 28, runs The Fig Bistro and co‑founded Millennium Valley Productions. He highlights his decade‑long involvement in downtown Vernon, a free‑meal program for seniors, and support for firefighters and veterans. His platform focuses on bolstering small businesses, retaining young residents, and expanding housing and infrastructure without eroding the city’s character. Other candidates include fellow business owner Distin Griffin and incumbent councilor Kari Gares, while mayor Victor Cumming seeks re‑election.

All three candidates stress community service and aim to guide Vernon’s growth amid economic and social challenges.
