Vernon launches free transit program for youth

The City of Vernon has implemented a Free Transit for Youth program, allowing residents aged 13 to 18 to ride local transit routes at no cost. Launched on October 1, 2026, the initiative has already seen over 1,200 students register for free passes.

Free service is available on Vernon Local Transit routes 1 through 9, 60, and 61, though Route 90 to Kelowna is excluded. To utilize the service, youth must obtain a free Youth Pass via the Umo Mobility App or a Umo Card. Registration can be completed in person at Vernon City Hall, the Vernon Library, the Regional District of North Okanagan Office, Enderby Municipal Hall, or Armstrong City Hall.

Applicants are required to provide proof of age, such as a birth certificate, BC Services Card, driver’s licence, passport, or student ID. Passes are valid from October 1 to September 30 and require annual re-registration.
