Verona and Sestri Levante approve budget surpluses for new bridge, tax relief and school upgrades

The Verona City Council approved a series of measures including the construction of a new 1.3 million‑euro bridge over the Progno di Avesa, financed largely from an administrative surplus, and automatic bonuses on the municipal waste tax (TARI) with reduced thresholds for businesses affected by nearby construction. Additional budget variations allocated funds for social programs, sports facilities and cultural initiatives.

In Sestri Levante, the municipal council voted to use more than €1.7 million of free surplus for a package of public‑works projects covering school refurbishments, road resurfacing, green‑space improvements and the restoration of the Torre Fascie. About €600 000 from restricted surplus will fund the new Bagnun venue and other minor works. The governing coalition presented the spending as a sign of fiscal solidity, while opposition members criticised the measures as ordinary administration with increased taxes.

Both decisions reflect a broader trend of Italian municipalities deploying accumulated budget surpluses to finance local infrastructure, services and tax relief without incurring new debt.
