Verona and Vicenza introduce stricter waste‑tax enforcement and upgraded recycling services

Verona has rolled out a combined door‑to‑door and controlled‑access bin system, identifying nearly 8,000 previously unknown waste‑tax (TARI) users in two years. The change added about 7,700 TARI accounts, with a jump of 2,700 in 2024 and a further increase of roughly 5,000 in 2025. Five environmental inspectors issued around 20 sanctions in the first operational week, fining up to €500 for illegal waste dumping, and video surveillance generated 44 alerts, 30 of which led to penalties. Residents now receive cards that can be paired with up to four mobile devices per household.

In Vicenza, the municipality, together with waste‑service provider Aim Ambiente, opened ten eco‑service points across the city and enhanced a green call‑center. Between December 2025 and May 2026, officials recovered roughly €1.5 million in unpaid waste taxes from 2020‑2023 and €360,000 from recycling‑access controls. New measures include hot‑wash and disinfection of all waste‑bin areas, Sunday opening of the western recycling centre, and cleaning of the new Parco della Pace. Smart waste trucks now use georeferenced routing, and a "Mangia Plastica" incentive rewards citizens for recycling PET bottles with points redeemable at local shops. A renewed contract secures employment for the city’s ecological workforce while keeping the waste‑tax increase below inflationary pressures.
