Verona faces elderly care crisis as nursing home waiting lists grow

The Veneto region is facing a growing crisis in elderly care, with approximately 12,000 seniors currently waiting for placement in nursing homes. In Verona specifically, the Spi Cgil union reports that 2,000 elderly individuals are on waiting lists for facilities within the Ulss 9 Scaligera district.

Financial burdens are a significant concern, as many families must pay private fees that average around 3,000 euros per month, with some reaching as high as 4,000 euros. This places heavy pressure on both retirees and the roughly 600,000 caregivers providing daily assistance. The Spi Cgil is calling for a “Pact for Non-Self-Sufficiency,” which includes increased resources for public facilities, improved home care services, and simplified access procedures.

Compounding the systemic issues are concerns regarding facility standards. At the Villa Monga nursing home in Verona, inspections by the Ulss led to the closure of the kitchen due to unhygienic conditions. Local politician Flavio Tosi has criticized the lack of transparency regarding these sanitary issues.
