Verona man sentenced to 7 years for stealing $300,000 from elderly client

John Boston, a 50-year-old former financial adviser from Verona, New Jersey, has been sentenced to seven years in state prison for stealing more than $300,000 from a 90-year-old client.

According to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, the victim had hired Boston to manage an inheritance she received following her brother's death. Boston, who had been granted power of attorney, depleted the woman's entire savings over a two-year period. He utilized ATM withdrawals, bank transfers, and diverted her Social Security benefits for his own use, which caused the victim to default on her bills.

Investigators found that Boston had not obtained authorization from his employer to provide services to the woman, nor did he register her as a client as required by federal law. Following a six-day trial in Essex County Superior Court, a jury convicted Boston of second-degree theft and failure to make required disposition.
