Verona Poison Control Center warns of plant and mushroom toxicity

The Verona Poison Control Center has issued a warning regarding increased risks of intoxication from plants, berries, and mushrooms during the summer months. Director Giorgio Ricci noted frequent accidental ingestions, particularly among children and pets.

Potentially dangerous plants include Solanum pseudocapsicum, which can be mistaken for cherry tomatoes, and Atropa belladonna, whose berries resemble blueberries. Oleander is also noted for its toxicity if ingested. Additionally, certain indoor plants like Dieffenbachia and Euphorbia can cause irritation through contact.

Mushroom consumption poses a severe risk, with misidentification potentially leading to irreversible liver damage. Experts warn against confusing edible species like Macrolepiota procera with toxic varieties in the Lepiota genus. In the Verona region, mycologists examined 3,241 specimens in 2025, identifying 836 as non-edible.
