Veronika Erjavec eliminated in Wimbledon first round
Slovenian player Veronika Erjavec was knocked out of the Wimbledon singles draw after a 2‑hour‑43‑minute match against French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean, losing 6‑4, 4‑6, 7‑6(10‑6). The result ends Slovenia's participation in the men's singles competition at the Grand Slam. Erjavec will still compete in the doubles tournament alongside Croatia's Petra Marčinko, where they will face Russia's Ekaterina Aleksandrova and Australia's Maya Joint.
In the same round, American legend Serena Williams also exited the tournament, falling 6‑3, 6‑7, 6‑3 to Australian Maya Joint. Williams entered Wimbledon as a wildcard and will now focus on doubles with her sister Venus.
Poland's Iga Swiatek, defending champion, began her campaign with a straight‑sets win over American Taylor Townsend, 6‑1, 2‑6, 6‑3, advancing to the next round where she will meet Czech Karolina Pliskova.
