Veronika Remišová warns Council of Europe of rule of law decay in Slovakia
Veronika Remišová, leader of the Za ľudí party, has submitted a report to the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly monitoring committee, warning of the decay of the rule of law and democracy in Slovakia. In her report to co-rapporteurs Deborah Bergamini and Claudio Kern, Remišová highlighted concerns regarding the independence of the judiciary, media freedom, and the functioning of anti-corruption institutions. She specifically noted a decline in prosecutions for corruption, tax crimes, and organized crime following changes to criminal legislation and the reorganization of specialized police units.
Remišová also raised concerns regarding the lack of media pluralism, noting that opposition representatives receive minimal airtime on public broadcasting.
In a separate matter, Remišová and other opposition members have called on Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický to disclose the selection process and compensation structures for officials at the state-owned electricity market organizer, OKTE. The opposition alleges that recent appointments to the company include individuals with close ties to ruling coalition politicians, arguing that state-owned supervisory boards should protect state assets rather than serve as sources of income for political nominees.
