Versailles to host Sofia Coppola ‘Marie-Antoinette’ exhibition

The Palace of Versailles will host an exhibition at the Petit Trianon from September 22, 2026, to January 24, 2027, celebrating Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film ‘Marie-Antoinette’. Created in collaboration with the director, the exhibition explores the film’s production, its unique aesthetic choices, and its lasting cultural influence on fashion and beauty.

Coppola’s film reimagined the historical figure through a contemporary lens, utilizing pastel colors, sophisticated hairstyles, and an eclectic soundtrack. The exhibition will highlight these visual elements, including the theatrical hairstyles designed by French hairstylist Odile Gilbert.

Beyond the cinematic tribute, interest remains in the historical beauty rituals of Marie-Antoinette. Unlike many of her contemporaries who practiced ‘dry toilette,’ the Queen was known for frequent baths using almond and linseed oils, as well as complex skincare routines involving botanical tonics and exfoliants.
