US Commerce Department to award $389M for semiconductor R&D
The US Department of Commerce has signed non-binding letters of intent to provide up to $389 million in research and development grants to four companies under the CHIPS and Science Act. The funding targets advancements in power semiconductors, critical materials, and technologies essential for fusion energy and AI data centers.
Helion is slated to receive up to $175 million to develop high-voltage power semiconductors and advanced modules for fusion power generation. Commonwealth Fusion Systems is set to receive up to $85 million to research radio-frequency plasma heating semiconductors, radiation-hardened electronics, and fusion diagnostics.
Vertical Semiconductor is provisionally granted up to $73 million to accelerate the development of vertical gallium nitride (GaN) power transistors, which aim to improve power density and efficiency in AI data center racks. Additionally, Sibelco will receive up to $56 million to advance purification technologies for ultra-high-purity quartz, a vital material used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
As a condition of these awards, the US government will acquire minority, non-controlling, and non-voting equity stakes in each of the recipient companies.
