VETC and Viettel Money suspend electronic wallet service fees
VETC and Viettel Money have announced the suspension of new monthly service fees for electronic wallets linked to electronic toll collection (ETC) accounts. The decision follows significant public backlash from vehicle owners regarding proposed monthly charges of 6,600 VND for individuals and 66,000 VND for organizations.
VETC stated that the suspension is intended to allow for a review of the policy, to listen to customer feedback, and to develop more suitable solutions. The company acknowledged that its communication and implementation process did not meet customer expectations. VETC clarified that the fees were intended for the electronic wallet service—a payment intermediary—rather than for road use or the toll accounts themselves.
Similarly, Viettel Money decided to halt transaction processing fees for customers using the ePass service linked to its wallet. The Vietnam Road Administration clarified that these charges are considered payment service fees under banking regulations and are distinct from road usage fees. The agency has requested relevant units to review their policies. Both companies confirmed that no such fees had been collected from users prior to the suspension.
