Veteran Nepalese journalist Arjun Gyawali dies at 80

Veteran journalist and press‑freedom activist Arjun Gyawali died on July 27 at B and B Hospital in Kathmandu at the age of 80. He had been battling heart and lung ailments and breathed his last at 8:40 p.m., according to his son Sagar Gyawali.

Originally from Chidika in Arghakhanchi, Gyawali later settled in Tilottama, Rupandehi. After a career as a Nepali language teacher, he entered journalism in 1967, edited the weekly Lumbini Sandesh and trained many aspiring reporters. He received the Federation of Nepali Journalists' Press Freedom Fighter title, the Government of Nepal's Senior Journalist Award, the Gopal Gotame Gold Medal and the Lumbini Province Social Service Medal. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and two sons. His last rites will be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat in Kathmandu.
