Kaylub Giamanco recounts stopping Silver Rail Elementary school shooter

Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter and father, has spoken publicly for the first time regarding his intervention during a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on October 15, 2026.

Giamanco described how a series of routine decisions led him past the school, where he witnessed a 16-year-old gunman, identified as Griffin John II, firing at a vehicle and throwing a rifle over a fence. After calling 911 and informing the dispatcher that he had to enter the building to prevent further loss of life, Giamanco entered the school.

He recounted army-crawling through a broken window toward a special needs classroom. Upon entering, he observed a teacher struggling with the gunman. Giamanco fired his weapon, fatally shooting the teenager to prevent further attacks. The shooting resulted in the deaths of three children, aged five, eight, and 11, as well as a 25-year-old teacher, Megan Lambert.

Giamanco expressed deep emotional distress over the incident, stating he is haunted by the sounds of children pleading for their lives and the fact that he could not save all the victims.
