Veterans dental care: New legislation and private initiatives aim to close coverage gaps

Legislative efforts are underway to address significant gaps in dental care for U.S. veterans. The Dental Care for Veterans Act (H.R. 210), introduced by Representative Julia Brownley and supported by the DAV, seeks to expand comprehensive dental coverage to all veterans enrolled in the VA healthcare system. Currently, only approximately 25% of VA-enrolled veterans qualify for dental services, often leaving service-disabled veterans without access to necessary preventive or restorative treatment.

Research indicates that poor oral health is linked to chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Furthermore, nearly 45% of veterans reported having teeth removed due to pain or infection after leaving military service. Proponents of the act argue that expanding eligibility must be accompanied by increased investment in the VA’s dental workforce, facilities, and community care networks to ensure timely access.

In the private sector, individual initiatives are also addressing these needs. Gregorich & Matack Family Dental in Duluth is accepting nominations to provide a full, no-cost mouth rehabilitation to a local veteran in honor of Veterans Day. The practice aims to address the systemic health risks associated with advanced dental deterioration and chronic oral infections.
