Turkish veterans continue protests in Ankara over social rights
Veterans and families of martyrs in Turkey have entered their 41st day of continuous protest in Ankara, moving their demonstrations to Kurtuluş Park after being removed from Güvenpark. The protesters are demanding equal social and professional rights, specifically seeking to close the gap between enlisted veterans and higher-ranking personnel.
Erdem Çerçioğlu, President of the Association of Martyr Families and Veterans, has accused authorities of making life difficult for them at the Bilkent Gazi Uyumevi, claiming they are being denied access to their own facility. Protesters have reported being moved between locations by police and have expressed frustration over what they describe as stalling tactics by the Ministry of Family and Social Services.
The Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB) has criticized the police interventions, stating that preventing peaceful protests violates the Constitution and international law. The TBB emphasized that the right to assembly is a fundamental pillar of a democratic society and that the treatment of veterans and their families is contrary to the principles of a rule-of-law state.
