Veterans protest proposed Memorial Arch in Washington, D.C
Veterans and protesters are continuing demonstrations at Memorial Circle in Washington, D.C., to oppose the construction of a proposed 25-story arch. The group, referred to as ‘No Arch’, has committed to protesting at the site until at least the November election.
Opponents argue that the monument would obstruct the historic, unbroken sightline between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. This specific alignment was established after the Civil War to symbolize national reconciliation and healing. Protesters, including retired military officers, claim the project would diminish the stature of existing monuments and desecrate hallowed ground.
The demonstrations have drawn participants from various locations, including Charlottesville and Honolulu. Protesters have expressed concerns that the project is being rushed and serves as a personal vanity project that would permanently alter the historical landscape of the capital.
