Veterans' Support Symbol Gains Popularity with Green Porch Light in Poland

A green‑coloured light installed on porch walls has become a visible sign of support for veterans. The practice began in the United States with the "Greenlight a Vet" campaign launched in 2015, which chose green for its association with action, hope and renewal. The campaign encourages households and public buildings to switch a bulb or set a smart‑light to green, especially during the week of Veterans Day, as a simple gesture of respect for former soldiers.

In Poland the custom has spread, with homeowners and local authorities joining the related "Operation Green Light" initiative. Participants install green bulbs or program lighting to display the colour, aiming to raise awareness of veterans' needs and to prompt community conversation and assistance. While the colour is primarily linked to veteran support, it can also be used decoratively, and not every green porch light necessarily signifies a campaign.

The movement highlights how a modest change in household lighting can serve as a public statement of solidarity, linking Polish residents to a broader international effort to honour veterans.
