Veterinarians comprise 43% of Spain's public health workforce

Fernando Simón, director of the Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), highlighted the significant role of veterinarians within the Spanish public health system. During a One Health conference, Simón noted that veterinarians comprise approximately 43% of public health professionals in Spain and represent 25% of the CCAES team.

Simón emphasized their importance in food protection and combating zoonoses and bacterial resistance. He specifically cited the veterinary sector's success in the National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance, noting a reduction of over 70% in antibiotic use within the field.
