Veterinarians highlight cat health signals and separation anxiety prevalence

Cats often hide pain and discomfort, so owners should watch for sudden changes such as a stop in facial or body marking on furniture, reduced grooming, increased hiding, less play, loss of appetite, lower water intake, elimination outside the litter box, or constant vigilance. Experts recommend a calm, enriched environment with stable routines, clean litter, ample food and water, and to seek veterinary or behavioral advice if these signs persist.

Veterinarian Carlos Gutiérrez reports that roughly 13 % of cats suffer from separation anxiety, while the majority relax when left alone. Cats form secure attachments to their caregivers, greeting them with meows and rubs on return. They may imagine owners searching for food or patrolling territory—cats can cover 5–7 km daily—shaping how they interpret owners' absences.
