Veterinarians Urge Parasite Prevention for Pets During Heat Waves and Indoor Living

In the Matamoros region, veterinarians warned that soaring temperatures increase the risk of disease for dogs and cats. Jaime Cabrera Valdez advised owners to keep pets up to date with vaccinations, flea and tick treatments, and regular deworming, noting that itinerant vaccination campaigns are being offered in local colonies. He emphasized that untreated pets can contract rabies and other serious illnesses, and stressed the importance of professional veterinary care.

On International Cat Day, experts highlighted that indoor cats remain vulnerable to external parasites such as fleas and mites, as well as internal parasites like heartworm and tapeworms. Walter Comas, director of the Animal Health Business Unit at MSD Salud Animal Argentina, explained that parasites can be introduced via clothing, other animals, or mosquitoes, and recommended routine antiparasitic protocols tailored to each cat’s lifestyle.
