Veterinarians warn of dangers posed by tilt-and-turn windows to cats

Veterinarians are warning pet owners about the dangers of tilt-and-turn windows, which can create a narrow V-shaped opening that traps cats. When a cat attempts to squeeze through, they can become stuck at the thorax or pelvis, leading to life-threatening complications such as ischemia, asphyxiation, or spinal cord injury.

In addition to window entrapment, veterinarians highlight the risk of falls, often referred to as “parachute syndrome.” A retrospective study by the École nationale vétérinaire d’Alfort involving 488 cats found that 11% of cats do not survive such accidents. While survival rates increase to approximately 90% if the animal survives the first 24 to 48 hours, falls from heights of just two stories can result in severe injuries, including jaw fractures, broken limbs, and lung lesions.
