Veterinary expert shares tips for managing pet digestive health

In anticipation of National Cat & Dog Gut Health Awareness Day on September 21, veterinary nutritionist Martha Cline, DVM, DACVIM, has provided guidance on managing digestive issues in pets.

Common causes of diarrhea in dogs and cats include dietary changes and stress, such as new household members, changes in routine, or environmental noise. To assist pets, Dr. Cline recommends slowly introducing new foods by mixing them with existing diets or consulting a veterinarian about highly digestible, fiber-enhanced options.

Additionally, providing a quiet environment can help mitigate stress-related issues. For cats, this may involve creating a secluded hideaway, while dogs may benefit from maintaining strict routines and extra attention. Owners are also advised to use supplements specifically designed for pets rather than human medications.
