Veterinary experts identify key signs of pain in dogs and cats

Identifying pain in dogs and cats can be difficult as early symptoms are often subtle and may be mistaken for routine changes or personality traits. Veterinary professor Ana Elisa Arruda Rocha from UniCuritiba emphasizes that monitoring posture, appetite, movement, and facial expressions is essential for early diagnosis and maintaining quality of life.

Cats are noted to be particularly challenging because they have a natural tendency to mask pain as a defense mechanism. Owners should watch for signs such as isolation, sudden behavioral changes, apathy, unexpected aggression, excessive fear, anxiety, and unusual vocalizations. These changes can indicate physical ailments or emotional health issues like stress and depression.
