Veterinary medicine evolves toward One Health and diverse clinical specializations

The veterinary profession is undergoing a significant transformation driven by social, environmental, and technological shifts. Experts emphasize the importance of the ‘One Health’ approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health to address global challenges such as climate change, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging diseases.

In Mexico, Tonatiuh Melgarejo, a professor at Western University of Health Sciences, visited the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez to discuss the diverse career paths available to veterinarians. His work spans from studying canine nutrition and Alzheimer’s disease to working with Komodo dragons. During his visit, he collaborated on a complex clinical case involving a senior dog with chronic pancreatic issues at the university's veterinary hospital.

In Chile, the focus remains on evolving veterinary roles to meet future demands. Professionals will increasingly need to master clinical skills alongside data interpretation, public policy, and new technologies like artificial intelligence, molecular diagnostics, and telemedicine to manage the risks posed by increased international mobility and changing disease vectors.
