Veysel Karaşın preserves traditional weaving in Buldan
In the Buldan district of Denizli, craftsman Veysel Karaşın is working to preserve traditional hand-weaving techniques that predate the introduction of electric looms in 1951. Using a century-old handloom, Karaşın focuses on maintaining cultural heritage rather than commercial mass production.
The process is highly labor-intensive, requiring approximately five days of preparation just to set up the thread reels and pass the yarns through the loom. Karaşın utilizes a traditional hornbeam wood loom to produce items such as shawls and peshtamals, aiming to ensure that the ancestral art of non-electric weaving is passed down to future generations.
