VfL Bochum bans synchronized jumping in stadium East Stand

VfL Bochum has implemented an immediate ban on synchronized, rhythmic jumping for fans in the East Stand of the Ruhrstadion. The decision follows an engineering assessment conducted as part of ongoing stadium modernization plans.

While engineers confirmed the structural load-bearing capacity of the stand is intact, they identified a ‘trampoline effect’ caused by mass synchronized movements. These vibrations can cause physical discomfort and nausea for spectators unaccustomed to such motion. The ban specifically targets coordinated jumping in blocks N2, O, P, and Q, but explicitly excludes spontaneous celebrations, such as jumping during goal celebrations.

The restriction is an alternative to a total closure of the East Stand, which would prevent up to 10,000 fans from attending matches. The club and local authorities intend for the ban to remain in place until the scheduled renovation of the stand is completed in 2028.
