Via Francigena del Sud project targets accessible tourism in Salento

The Via Francigena del Sud in Salento is being developed into a model for accessible and inclusive tourism. The project, titled ‘Per una Via Francigena del Sud accessibile a tutti’, covers approximately 120 kilometers between Lecce and Santa Maria di Leuca, spanning five stages and involving seven municipalities.

Funded by the Italian Ministry of Tourism, the initiative is led by the Municipality of Poggiardo in collaboration with the European Association of Via Francigene Routes (AEVF) and the Associazione Mollare Mai. The project aims to expand the traditional concept of accessibility to accommodate not only individuals with motor, sensory, or cognitive disabilities but also elderly travelers and those with specific dietary or temporary physical needs.

Key planned improvements include mapping critical areas, georeferencing routes and services, and performing necessary maintenance. Technological innovations such as augmented and virtual reality will be implemented to enhance access to cultural and landscape heritage. Additionally, the plan includes the installation of support areas featuring first aid kits, solar-powered smart benches, and tactile QR codes to facilitate a more inclusive experience.
