Via Lietuva resumes construction on sinking Kretinga–Vydmantai path

Via Lietuva has announced that construction work has resumed on the pedestrian and bicycle path between Kretinga and Vydmantai along the A11 Šiauliai–Palanga highway. The project faced delays after a 330-meter section of the path began sinking due to specific geological conditions, including peat and sapropel soil layers and fluctuating groundwater levels.

An independent expert review found no violations of regulations or design solutions. However, after a section subsided by as much as 82 cm in August 2025, initial attempts to stabilize the ground through additional loading proved insufficient.

Following new geological studies, a revised technical solution has been approved. The path will be reinforced with reinforced concrete piles to stabilize the structure in the difficult soil zone. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, with final asphalt paving expected to proceed if weather conditions remain favorable.
