VIA Rail announces $6.7 billion fleet overhaul and service updates
VIA Rail is undergoing a major fleet overhaul as part of a $6.7 billion investment to modernize its long-distance, regional, and remote services. Alstom Canada will supply 313 new passenger rail cars to replace aging equipment, with the first cars expected to enter service in 2031 and the full order completed by 2035. The agreement includes approximately $4 billion for the rail cars and $700 million for technical support and spare parts over 15 years. Additionally, Stadler will supply new locomotives to complete the fleet renewal.
In terms of regional service, VIA Rail has decided to maintain 67 weekly stops at Toronto’s Guildwood Station despite previous plans to phase out the service. Starting October 25th, the winter timetable will include these stops to support commuters and travelers on the Quebec City–Windsor corridor, specifically on routes connecting Toronto to Ottawa and Montreal. The revised schedule provides seven weekday trains at Guildwood, ensuring continued connectivity for the local community.
