VIA Rail service changes spark concern in Cobourg and Scarborough
VIA Rail has announced service changes along the Québec City–Windsor Corridor, effective October 25, which have drawn criticism from local officials and commuters.
The Town of Cobourg expressed concern over the discontinuation of Train 641, which provided a direct early-morning connection to Toronto. Mayor Lucas Cleveland stated the decision is “beyond unacceptable” for commuters who rely on the service for employment and education, noting that the change could impact both local residents and the tourism economy.
Additionally, VIA Rail will cease service at the Guildwood and Malton stations. The Crown corporation stated that eliminating these stops will improve overall travel times due to their proximity to Toronto Union Station and availability of GO Transit services. However, local representatives and passengers have described the move as an inconvenience that forces travelers to detour to other stations to access the rail network.
