Viacha military base explosions kill at least nine people in Bolivia
Two powerful explosions occurred on Friday at the Bolívar Mechanized Artillery Regiment in Viacha, Bolivia, causing significant destruction to the military facility and surrounding civilian homes. The first detonation reportedly involved black powder from pyrotechnic materials, while a second, much larger explosion is under investigation.
The death toll has risen to at least nine people, including several soldiers, while numerous others remain missing. Dozens of people, including military personnel, police, and civilians, have been injured. The explosions caused extensive damage to the local community, with reports of up to 50 homes suffering severe structural damage.
In response, President Rodrigo Paz has declared three days of national mourning. The Bolivian Army has ordered soldiers from the Bolívar Regiment to remain at their homes for security reasons and has begun transferring all remaining military ordnance to the Bilbao Regiment for secure custody. An investigation into involuntary manslaughter has been launched by the public prosecutor's office to determine the exact cause of the incident and establish responsibility.
